Will The F1 Circus Head To Majorca In 2012?
Truth be told, I was never really expecting to use the phrase ‘Majorca Grand Prix’. Holding a major sporting event on a small Balearic island would be a decent way to establish a ‘brand’ so to speak, and I’m not really against it as a venue for that reason alone. Majorca also has the advantage of being in a particularly tropical-like zone with fine weather but not harsh heat (something it would have in common with the majority of Formula One race days). No, my problem with a new European venue is simply that it’s a new European venue. That seems a little too backwards looking for me. After years of merely token trips to Japan and the Americas, Formula One started looking like an international sport. It is genuinely exciting that the very ‘western’ sport of Formula One now has a Middle Eastern contact point. Well then. It would really be almost hypocritical of me to complain that I may now rent Cala san Vicente villas to so see one of the world’s greatest sporting events at close proximity. But Spain already has Catalunya, a traditional and regular venue for the F1 circus. So why does it, or any country in Europe really deserve to be visited more than once a year?.
Considering that Valencia, hosts of the European Grand Prix street race, are in a contract for at least four more years with the FIA, a Majorcan Grand Prix would mean three Spanish venues per year. The Valencia street-race is essentially a tedious Monaco: the same low level of over taking with none of the charm of location. Really, this race is so utterly inconsequential that I say to those with cottages to rent, please look elsewhere to be entertained. And none of this is to say that the FIA should consider some other Mediterranean venue to replace Valencia?
It’s not something that Formula One cares an awful lot about, but it’s worth considering the environmental impact this race is likely to have. The site of the new venue would be Llucmajor, in the south of the island. Aside from the occasional noise pollution, to we honestly believe that the Grand Prix is worth uprooting vast swathes of Countryside for?? New bids are coming in left, right and centre from far more exotic (in Formula One’s terms) locations, so who honestly believes we’d stay in Apartments in Puerto Pollensa for something like a decade? This’d be a venue used for its first contract alone?
