Polymer AR Magazines From Magpul
Polymer AR magazines offer an unrivalled combination of features and qualities compared to traditional steel and aluminum units. The Soviets had gone to plastic mags in the late 60s and these were standard with the AK-74. The first Western military to adopt them was Austria’s in 1977 with the Steyr AUG
A key advantage is lightness. The Magpul EMAG recently adopted by the British Army to replace an excellent H&K steel magazine is 40% lighter, reducing an infantryman’s burden load by over 1 kg. It is easy to mold rough surfaces into polymer to assist grip in the wet. The Magpul PMAG has prominent ribs that enhance grip still further, however these can stop compatibility with firearms with non STANAG magazine wells like the HK416, a problem the EMAG was introduced to overcome. This lead to the British Army adopting the EMAG rather than the earlier PMAG
Polymer magazines are self lubricating, which strongly benefits operation. They can be molded with a mag catch indentation rather than a hole to prevent dirt and sand entering the housing. The EMAG has a detachable cover that reduces the strain on the magazine lips when loaded, further prevents dirt ingress and slots over the bottom of the mag when not in use to prevent it getting lost and to provide impact protection to the mag on ejection onto a hard surface. The PMAG has the option of a Magpul replacement for the floorplate which also provides impact protection and provides a handle with which to extract magazines from tight pouches. You can easily remove the floorplate for maintenance.
Corrosion is addressed by the use of a specially treated stainless spring. Polymer magazines can be designed to be clipped together and some variants have windows and brightly colored followers for instant verification of round count. Magpul magazines are fitted with a 3rd generation anti tilt, self lubricating follower. Tooling with polymer is relatively easy so variations can easily be accomplished. Magpul recently introduced a 308 PMAG to suit SR25, M110 and AR10 rifles.
